Cosmo Bag Sew Along: Step #14

It’s heeeeerrrrrreee!!!  The end of the Cosmo Bag Sew Along… dun dun duuuun.  I’m kind of wiping my brow at this point, this bag has a lot of steps in it.  Now we have a gorgeous bag with big pockets and full lining, but we’re missing the button to finish the closure.  Hopefully you’ll have picked up a cover button kit — I found mine at JoAnn Fabrics with a coupon (3 cheers!).  And you should also have your round fabric piece that was cut way back in Step #1.

My cover button kit came with two buttons, but I only needed one.  So, I kept the two plastic pieces for molding the fabric button, plus one metal top and one metal back.

Start with the plastic mold piece, flat side down on the table.

Your round fabric piece will fit inside this as shown.  Right side should be face down.

Place the metal button front with the smooth side down, touching the wrong side of the fabric.

Tuck the raw edges into the button and place the button back on top of it like you’re making a sandwich.

Using the little pusher, place it on top and press down… HARD.  You’ll hear and feel the back of the button “pop” into the button top.  That’s when you know it’s secure and tightly fitted.

Voila!  You have a fabric covered button… so pretty.

On the bag itself, gently fold over the button loop tab to see where it hits on the bag.  I chose to sew my button right below the center of the band piece from Step #5.

Here’s the finished bag in all its glory!

I made this bag before I packed up and moved out of Los Angeles… it was a very belated birthday gift for my friend Kellie and she tells me that she uses it every day for toting around a whole host of items.  Now I have some requests for more bags.  Ha!  Hello, Christmas sewing… you all might see the Cosmo Bag a *lot* on here as we get closer to Christmas.  I found that this project was great for using up bigger chunks of my fabric stash and I love that this bag is environmentally more friendly.  No one ever guesses that this bag, in particular, came from an old sheets and duvet set.

How did your own Cosmo Bag turn out?  Be sure to post your blog in the comments section and share your pictures!  I can’t wait to see your finished work…  happy toting and sewing!
